The Dice — 013

Postcards for election conversation, print to save satire, the death of news radio, photography without AI, a lost ship and matzo balls, and better ways to inhabit the web.

Though I’ve posted this a few times already, I believe it’s worth sharing yet again because it’s that powerful. Hopefulness is the warrior emotion that keeps the devil down in the hole. Hope—A warrior emotion! My battery feels like it’s charging once more.

After a few bumps, we finally flipped the switch on the new website for Same Team Partners. It’s so frustrating trying to develop code anymore and relying on others has been both a godsend and a lesson in patience. That said, if you need a fantastic Ghost developer, I can not recommend Cathy at Spectral Web Services enough. She’s honest, kind, and super smart.

Last thing and then we can roll out of here. I’ve added a feature at the bottom of the newsletter to indicate what you thought of this issue. Click your feelings, I’d love the feedback whatever it may be.

I’m happy to share that upon request, Chris Glass has collected his I’m Voting Postcards for everyone to buy or DIY. “Someone I love…votes down (Republican) party lines. This family member will open conversations about politics in earnest, but I never have thoughts organized to truly engage. So I started to organize my thoughts."

The result is a set of beautifully designed (of course they are, it’s Chris after-all) thoughts on why he’s voting Forward.

WCBS 880 AM news radio will cease broadcasting at the end of this month after six decades of reporting. Sadly, they are not alone as more news radio stations in the US and Canada plan to shutter. I wonder how many of us can even recall the last time any of us listened to AM radio. It’s been a while for me, but I do remember many nights as a kid listening to Paul Harvey tell The Rest of the Story through my Panosonic AM radio tucked underneath the pillow. Adios AM news radio!

You know in about a decade or so, some asshat will come up with a new idea for a startup to broadcast “download-free” podcasts.

I use my phone’s native camera more than any other app. I know there are alternatives out there but I just haven’t been drawn to use any of them regularly. That might change with the next version of Halide with its Process Zero option. “It skips over the standard iPhone image processing system. It produces photos with more detail and allows the photographer greater control over lighting and exposure. This is not a photo filter—it really develops photos at the raw, sensor-data level.”

Manuel Moreale announced a cool project and I’m happy to help promote it. “I’m starting a new weekly series called "People and Blogs" where I ask interesting people to talk about themselves and their blogs. My dream is to be able to spend my time helping people going online with their blogs and discover that there are better ways to inhabit the web.” I am here for more of these projects and, like Manu says, better ways to inhabit the web. I’m also ready to be interviewed.

Speaking of too damn cool personal sites, check out Aaron Shapiro's. Aaron designed the site for 404 Media. This is a site you have to click around to really appreciate the work. Including his brand work for 404, which includes logo variations based on the look of warez from back in the day. Warez!

Check out this headline: “Digital only news service plans to thrive through newly unearthed technology called print.” It’s true! The Onion, the site of satire, home of real Midwest grain-fed Fake News is heading to the press. A real press, like, with paper and ink and stuff! “This week, The Onion began distributing a print edition for the first time in more than a decade and will soon deliver it monthly to everyone who subscribes to its site. The move is a throwback to the publication’s roots as a campus weekly in the late 1980s.” This is the way.

A full-year subscription is only $60 and if you care about building a better future and improved mental health you’ll subscribe. I did as soon as Dice Foreign Correspondent Anthony Baker sent over the link.

Let’s end on a feel-good story where being lost at sea and corned beef and pastrami converge. Nathan and Kim Maker, from Oklahoma, took a trip to the Gulf Coast where they intended to enjoy a delicious meal at Kenny & Ziggy’s after doing a little scuba diving. The weather started getting rough, their tiny boat was lost, and the Makers spent forty hours “bobb[ing] in the Gulf of Mexico more than 20 miles offshore. They got stung by jellyfish and pried sucker fish from their legs.” Thankfully, they were rescued but in pretty bad shape. Days later, as soon as they were released from the hospital, they went right to the deli.

Did that make you hungry? Here's a map of the best Jewish deli in every state. Sadly, Kenny & Ziggy's did not make the cut.

Hey! Make sure you are registered to vote this Fall. Some states are now requiring registered voters to re-apply. And then have a good week.
